It’s Over! :: La Quinta family photographer Melissa Landres

Summer is officially over, and today was the first day of school. I was the first one out of bed this morning, so I started waking everyone else up, “Come on get up, It’s the first day of school!” I sang. The kids were happy, they got up without complaint, ate breakfast, and got ready. They were still a bit tired, but really excited. They were looking forward to seeing their friends again, and having recess (their favorite thing about school)! We took our traditional “first day of school” photo outside in the front yard, and then hopped in the car… off to school! As I was driving down the road, I started to get this weird feeling in my stomach… I thought it was because I hadn’t eaten much before we left… oh well, I’ll just eat a little more when I get back, I told myself.  We arrived at school, parked the car and joined the many other parents and kids rushing through the school gates to find their new teachers and classrooms, smiling and saying hi to old friends all along the way. My daughter, not yet old enough for school, and I, got the boys to where they needed to go. I got my goodbye kisses from each of them, and snapped a few more pics of them at their new desks. The boys were still so very happy and excited, waving me good-bye. No one even hinted that they were nervous, and I was feeling like I was going to be sick.

I don’t know what was wrong with me this morning, as Sonia and I drove home, my stomach was so upset. Why was I so upset? Why this year more than any other year… I was more upset today than I was on the first day of Kindergarten, why? I love our school, and I was thrilled with the teachers the kids got, both very talented, highly recommended teachers, so I knew that they were in “good hands.” So I had no reason to worry… but this summer it really hit me hard that my kids are growing up, and that it’s going by too fast, and I don’t like it… My “babies” are quickly turning into “little people”. This summer just blew by in a flash… and I know this school year will fly by too! And I think I’m sick because I know (in the back of my mind) that next year my baby will be entering Kindergarten, and that’s when I will really just fall apart…

I know I can’t stop it, but I am trying… I am trying to freeze time. Every moment, every memory. Every trip, every smile, everything we do… because this is the story of our life, and I never want to forget it.
